Antibiotic Use Increased in 2010 Food Animal Production

by Helena Bottemiller | Nov 01, 2011

Sales of antibiotics intended for domestic food animals increased from 2009 to 2010, according to new data released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Pew Health Group analyzed the numbers in the report, the second-ever issued by FDA, which showed a boost of 6.7 percent, from 28.8 million pounds in 2009 to 30.6 million pounds in 2010.

If ionophores, which are used exclusively on animals, are excluded from the analysis, the increase is 8.6 percent.

Pew points out that the increase in antimicrobial sales is greater than the 1.3 percent increase in meat production, which was up by 1.2 billion pounds to 92.1 billion pounds.

Laura Rogers, project director for the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming said the report backs up their calls for reforms.

“This report confirms what we already know: industrial farms are using antibiotics on a massive scale that far exceeds what doctors are using to treat sick people,” said Rogers. “As a result, infections are becoming more difficult and expensive to treat.  The time for the Administration to protect our health is long overdue.”

Ron Phillips, vice president for legislative and public affairs for the Animal Health Institute, which represents the animal pharmaceutical industry, said the numbers do not necessarily illustrate a trend.

“In the eight years that AHI voluntarily collected and released this data, we saw many year-to-year changes — both up and down — in this range,” said Phillips. “These two limited data points are not sufficient to draw any conclusions.”

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY), the only microbiologist serving in Congress, continues to push for a bill that would restrict farmers from using seven classes of antibiotics, deemed important for human health, unless needed to treat sick animals. In the Senate, Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Susan Collins (R-ME), Jack Reed (D-RI) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced similar legislation last summer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER AND HUMAN HEALTH

“I’m dying of thirst!”

Well, you just might. It sounds so simple. H20. Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. But this substance better known as water, is the most essential element, next to air, to our survival. Water truly is everywhere, still most take it for granted.

Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it, we would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. (Are you having trouble reading this? Drink up!) Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. An estimated seventy-five percent of Americans have mild, chronic dehydration. That’s a pretty scary statistic for a developed country, where water is readily available through the tap or bottle.

Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. The body cannot work without it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact, all the cell and organ functions made up in our entire anatomy and physiology depend on water for their functioning.

  • Water serves as a lubricant
  • Water forms the base for saliva
  • Water forms the fluids that surround the joints.
  • Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration.
  • Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste- the best detox agent.
  • Regulates metabolism

In addition to the daily maintenance of our bodies, water also plays a key role in the prevention of disease. Drinking eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. And those are just a few examples! As you follow other links on our website, you can read more in depth about how water can aid in the prevention and cure of many types of diseases, ailments and disorders that affect the many systems of our bodies.

Since water is such an important component to our physiology, it would make sense that the quality of the water should be just as important as the quantity. Drinking water should always be clean and free of contaminants to ensure proper health and wellness.

HEALTH RISKS OF HEAVY METALS

Like heavy metal? Think again.

We’re not talking Ozzy here, but in fact heavy metals that can be very harmful to your health if found in your drinking water.

Severe effects include reduced growth and development, cancer, organ damage, nervous system damage, and in extreme cases, death. Exposure to some metals, such as mercury and lead, may also cause development of autoimmunity, in which a person’s immune system attacks its own cells. This can lead to joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and diseases of the kidneys, circulatory system, and nervous system.

The young are more prone to the toxic effects of heavy metals, as the rapidly developing body systems in the fetus, infants and young children are far more sensitive. Childhood exposure to some metals can result in learning difficulties, memory impairment, damage to the nervous system, and behavioural problems such as aggressiveness and hyperactivity. At higher doses, heavy metals can cause irreversible brain damage. Children may receive higher doses of metals from food than adults, since they consume more food for their body weight than adults.

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

Toxic metals can be present in industrial, municipal, and urban runoff, which can be harmful to humans and aquatic life. Increased urbanization and industrialization are to blame for an increased level of trace metals, especially heavy metals, in our waterways. There are over 50 elements that can be classified as heavy metals, 17 of which are considered to be both very toxic and relatively accessible. Toxicity levels depend on the type of metal, it’s biological role, and the type of organisms that are exposed to it.

The heavy metals linked most often to human poisoning are lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium. Other heavy metals, including copper, zinc, and chromium, are actually required by the body in small amounts, but can also be toxic in larger doses.

Heavy metals in the environment are caused by air emissions from coal-burning plants, smelters, and other industrial facilities; waste incinerators; process wastes from mining and industry; and lead in household plumbing and old house paints. Industry is not totally to blame, as heavy metals can sometimes enter the environment through natural processes. For example, in some parts of the U.S., naturally occurring geologic deposits of arsenic can dissolve into groundwater, potentially resulting in unsafe levels of this heavy metal in drinking water supplies in the area. Once released to the environment, metals can remain for decades or centuries, increasing the likelihood of human exposure.

In addition to drinking water, we can be exposed to heavy metals through inhalation of air pollutants, exposure to contaminated soils or industrial waste, or consumption of contaminated food. Because of contaminated water, food sources such as vegetables, grains, fruits, fish and shellfish can also become contaminated by accumulating metals from the very soil and water it grows from.

Difference between Organic and Inorganic Minerals

We hear day in and day out that we need more minerals. “Vitamins and minerals” are words that go hand in hand when promotion healthy diet items and supplements. In fact, the body needs about 70 different minerals to carry out all the functions a body is required to do. But many may not realize there are two types of minerals: organic and inorganic. Between those two types, it may be easy to recognize which one does a body good. Ever hear people tout the benefits of an inorganic diet?

Here is a brief overview of the differences between these two:

Organic minerals- these are once living, or are living and can bring life to cells. These contain carbon, and their electrons spin clockwise, just like those of the human body. Additionally, these cells can form an ionic bond with the body and can easily break down into materials to help with bodily function, such as tissue repair.

Inorganic materials- these were never living, without carbon and cannot bring life to cells. The body treats these metals like toxins and are tightly held together; they cannot be easily broken down. And, their electrons spin counterclockwise, out of sync with the rest of the body.

Let’s look further at what negative effects inorganic minerals have. Inorganic minerals are removed from water during nature’s water cycle, that is, during evaporation from the sun, only the water itself is removed, with the inorganic chemicals behind. The distillation process is one filtering process that mimics what nature does on its own. So, why are these minerals removed from pure drinking water?

Inorganic minerals are picked up as the water supply runs through the ground. These inorganic, or non-living, minerals cannot be utilized by humans or animals. However, plants can. And, they are the organisms that turn them into the organic minerals we can use through photosynthesis. But, the inorganic minerals that pass into our drinking water cannot help us and can in fact, harm us.

This is because inorganic chemicals cannot absorb as nutrition into the cell walls and thus gets deposited elsewhere into the body. This can cause arthritis, joint pain, kidney and gallstones and even clogged arteries. Lime (calcium carbonate) is one of these minerals. Just think about what that does to your bathtub! Yeah- takes a special cleaner and a lot of elbow grease to scratch the surface of those deposits. (Remember- this is the main ingredient in cement!) In fact, some people suffer from such high concentrations of lime that their hands and fingers can become massively disfigured.

Dr. Norman W. Walker, who wrote a book on this area of water, says that of a person drinks two pints of water a day in a 70-year life span, it will total 4,500 gallons. If it is not distilled, Dr. Walker estimates this water will include 200 to 300 pounds of rock, including lime, magnesium and other mineral deposits that the body cannot use. He does note that much of this will be collected by the body’s water, blood and lymph systems to be eliminated through excretory channels. However, some of will stay in the body, causing those problems mentioned above.

Does your water contain these inorganic minerals? Fill up a pot and let it evaporate. As note above, the water cycle only takes the hydrogen and oxygen from the liquid and leaves behind what else is left. If you’ve got mineral deposits in your pot, you may want to look into getting only distilled water or getting a reverse osmosis filtration system.

According to recent news and reports, most tap and well water in the U.S. are not safe for drinking due to heavy industrial and environmental pollution. Toxic bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals routinely penetrate and pollute our natural water sources making people sick while exposing them to long term health consequences such as liver damage, cancer and other serious conditions. We have reached the point where all sources of our drinking water, including municipal water systems, wells, lakes, rivers, and even glaciers, contain some level of contamination. Even some brands of bottled water have been found to contain high levels of contaminants in addition to plastics chemical leaching from the bottle.

WATER AND PETS

You’ve seen it; even probably done it. Drinking bottled water, or filtered water from the refrigerator while your cat, dog or other pet’s water bowl is filled from that, ugh, tap. Why should our furry (or scaly) companions drink lower quality water than us?

We all know that public water systems can contain certain levels of bacteria. But we knew that- that’s why we are drinking the “safe” water. Still, many continue to feed fill pet bowls with tap water. Animals, like humans, need water to survive. And, like humans, animals are about 80% water. So, most animal experts will agree that pets should be given the same quality water as humans: bottled and/or filtered. As stated earlier, municipal and well water can contain many harmful things, even parasites. And, they don’t discriminate between pets and people!

One of these parasites is Giardia, a single-celled organism that ends up living in the mucous lining of the intestines. This parasite can cause diarrhea in animals as well as humans. If a puppy or kitten is suffering malnutrition, the effects of Giardia can be worse. Treatment in the form of antiprozoal drugs can be administered to infected animals.

There are also things in water that can cause cancer- just like in humans. (Fluoride, for one.) Giving a pet filtered water will remove a potentially sickness-causing organism or metal from being ingested.

Cats and dogs, the two most common pets, need fresh water and plenty of it. On a side note, cats are very finicky about their water; they like it fresh. The longer the water sits out, the more oxygen it loses.

Fish, who live in water, can be greatly affected by water with high levels of chlorine or ammonia; chemical used in some treatment plants. A certain pH value is needed in tank water for fish to have a proper living environment. Also, poor quality water can be more prone to ‘bad’ algae. Check with your aquarium retailer for specifics.

For amphibians and more “wet” pets, they do not drink water, bit absorb it. Frogs, salamanders and others in this category need water to absorb through their skin and the higher that quality, the longer they will live. If one finds a tadpole and wants to keep it as a pet, it is best to not use tap water; they are very sensitive to water quality.

One more note of interest. It doesn’t really matter what type of water is used in a pet’s bowl if the bowl is not cleaned frequently. Bacteria can grow from mold in the air in your pet’s bowl. (That’s what those growths are!) So, clean the bowl often and keep it filled with fresh, filtered water. Additionally, drinking more water can also reduce urinary tract disorders in cats and dogs.

With water being a crucial part of a pet’s health, it is no wonder that many pet supply manufacturers offer water fountains, water filters, special bowls, special dispensers and more. When it comes down to it though, a normal stainless steel or glass bowl filled with water from a home-filtration system works well.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome  (PRRS)

We had a situation I want to share with you. I do not have the customer’s permission to share his personal information, but we did something pretty important on a hog barn in Canada.

It all started with the customer calling me about 2 years ago.  I was actually at the Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock.  He talked to me for about 1 1/2 hours on the phone and we decided we needed to get a water report, which he agreed with.  To make a long story short, the customer did not get the report back to us.  Time went by and a year ago, we placed a Dealer in their area. The Dealer followed up with the customer and sold them Oxy Blast and companion products, since they had tried everything else and were not happy with the results.  The customer commented that the price was good for most of the other products, but they were using a product that was costing them about the same, or maybe a little more, than Oxy Blast.

They had a blood viral infection in their hogs.  So, they used Oxy Blast at high levels that we recommended and  a little while later, the hogs started doing really well.  The customer started believing in the product, so we started a protocol of prevention and using the product while documenting results. The customer did an Elisa in July after using Oxy Blast according to our protocol.  The Elisa showed that the customer had PRRS Positive. From what I understand, this is a test to see if PRRS was ever present at any point. To find out if they currently have PRRS they do a Titer, but the Titer came back Negative;  meaning there was none there! This customer has had an increase in the pigs they sell to a local butcher shop because of the quality of the meat & fat content and the customers say that it’s the best tasting pork they have ever had. This customer now calls me on a weekly basis to discuss what they should do next.  We have them on some additional protocols that are proving a lot of interesting things.

This is just another of our many success stories from livestock producers.

 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The following is a testimonial from an Organic Cow-Calf operator that used our product.  He was so impressed that he became a Dealer 2 years ago. I put him on the phone with a customer the other day and he started mentioning all these different things that were happening to people around him. I asked him to send me a note.

Hi Zak,

Over the duration of my experience with oxyblast I have witnessed the following results at home and on customer’s property:

-  A customer had manganese in his water, that over a number of years, plugged the holes in the well crib to the point that he could pump his well dry and observe the number of holes still open.  He talked to me and asked me to shock treat the well with Oxy Blast.  A shock treatment was done at 500 PPM,  and an additional purge of 100PPM, then letting the well stand for six hours.  When the customer pumped his well he could see that 8 additional holes had opened up.

Another shock treatment was done much stronger than the first.  The water in the well was bubbling pretty good.  This second shock treatment opened up 10 additional holes in the crib.  This was a 40 year old well that had years of magnesium build up.

-  At home the iron was high enough that white clothes could not be washed without staining.  With the introduction of Oxy Blast into the water,  white clothes were washed and there was no staining.  Since then an iron filter has been installed to remove most of the iron from the water.  (happy wife)

-  Livestock producers have reported that there is less ice build up around water bowls in winter.  Probably because water does not smell and it tastes better, so animals drink instead of licking and splashing it to get used to it before they drink.

-  A producer with sulphates in the water noticed that with Oxy Blast in the water,  the livestock quit coughing and their feet improved and the manure tightened up.  The livestock also consumed less free choice mineral.  When animals had hoof rot on summer pasture, the rancher hauled the cows home to drink the Oxy Blast water and the feet healed.

 ~ By the way – he just won Organic Farmer of the year! ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 .
I just got this e-mail from someone using this formula for potatoes and seeing 40 tons an acre and harvesting 2 Days earlier. Apply 1.5 litres Oxy Blast per acre in 100 litres water, commencing when the plant shows 3-4 inches leaf area diameter. Repeat every seven days until the rows close in. Re-spray when blight conditions occur. It is a contact killer only so apply as soon as it starts raining.
Also, we are getting a lot of calls about Goats, Broilers, Turkeys and Dairies in the last
few weeks.  All these farm operators are seeing incredible results.  Following is a sampling of comments:
1.  The water is used by 316 milking goats (30 of them are really low producers), 41 dry goats, 5 breeding bucks and 9 bull calves (age between 1 and 9 months).
Use per month:
About 27,000 gallons of water and 30 litres (8 gallons) of OxyBlast (including 4 litres for
treatments) plus 14 kg (2.5 gallons) of Acidifier (including the 2.7 kg. we need for the kids milk in the nursery).  We brought the PH from 7.7 down to 6 – 6.5 and our SPC has never been as low as it is now.
2. We have a broiler operation that got their pullets in from a hatchery. The hatchery
called to let them know that the batch they got is from the same batch that had salmonella. The farmer called the local Oxy Blast Dealer and he got him to use only 150 PPM for a while and purge it every 4 days. The rest of the producers that bought this batch, still had salmonella and they all had to be euthanized (too bad, we could have helped them). The producer then used a 300 PPM solution of Oxy Blast to disinfect the barn. (wearing gloves and misting it in, as well as spraying around etc. is a good idea) All of the other barns had signs of infection; the barn treated with Oxy Blast Barn did not. The producer used to have a death loss of 6%; the death loss is now .4 of 1%!
3.   A very large producer is seeing a death loss drop. They used to have a death loss of 7%, but after a 30 day trial with Oxy Blast in 2 barns, they saw the death loss drop to 2.2%. The other barns still had 7%. Nothing else was changed so it has to be the Oxy Blast. As you know there are too many variables on farms to judge what might or might not be causing this, however nothing else has been changed on those farms.
4.  A Turkey Farmer mentioned that it is sometimes a struggle to get his birds up to 15KG; usually they can just get above 13KG tops. He also mentioned they are on a quota system in Canada. The farmer used to use a Chlorine Dioxide based product on his farm but he was not happy with results he was getting.  So he replaced it with Oxy Blast.  After a full cycle, his death loss went down and his birds were up to 15.96 KG. He shipped 15,000 KG more that he was supposed to (he is only allowed to go to 25,000 more a year). He has a problem; either he goes to 500 less or he buys more quota or he ships early.  What a nice problem to have!
5.  Dairy Farmers are all seeing milk increase, clean water and many health benefits. We get more calls and comments from Dairy Farmers than you can imagine.  I cannot
remember all of them but we keep getting the same positive feedback: lower SCC,
increased milk production, less mastitis & hoof issues, better conception rates, better healthier calves, etc.
Additional  Notes:
Poultry -
When a poultry farm has Necrotic Enteritis, it’s usually caused because of bedding and
the paste on the bedding (scours in poultry is called ‘Paste’).  We suggest they spread Calcium Carbonate (Limestone ground finely) on bedding; not only on bedding but around feeders and waterers, as well. This will keep the ammonia, etc. down so that there are less heath issues.
Bacteria -
There are 3 kinds of bacteria we want to eliminate: Coddus (spherically shaped); Bacillus (rod shaped): Spirallum (spiral or curved rod shaped).
Water Storage -
The more different issues I address, the more I’ve come to believe in Contact Time (sufficient time in the storage of water) to ensure effectiveness.  It is critical when dealing with Rotten Egg Smell or with iron and manganese. I believe there are 2 options when injecting Oxy Blast … Algae control is not easy…
.                                 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I want to start with a trial and a couple of testimonials.
We get so many testimonials that sometimes I forget to write them down or send them to our website manager.  One of the testimonials I want to share is the one from Dales Organization.  One of his Dealers did a trial at a hog operation in the central U.S. and the results were very good. Let me include that they saw the pigs go to market at a more rapid time frame; they also saw better quality and less issues than normal.
Swine Finisher Economic Results
In a recent grow-finishing trial with an Oxy Blast treated barn versus a control group,the pigs on Oxy Blast had the following results:
Total Benefit
10 days to market sooner – resulting in an economic gain of …
Total Net Advantage                                                                  $16.60
.
Dairy testimonial
A recent dairy customer claimed a somatic cell count drop from 375,000 to 160,000; also milk production increased substantially.  This customer started on Oxy Blast on March 9th 2011 and the results were shared on March 29th 2011.  That is incredible.  I have never had a farmer tell me about results that happened that fast. This was from a Dealer in Canada, who also told me that this customer is on a quota system and said, “Now, I guess I have to cut back on the cows I am milking”.  – What a nice problem to have!
Goat Farm ~
I am in Ontario on a business trip on my way to Quebec to train a new Dealer.  I stopped in Ontario because I have been working with a goat farmer since the end of November 2010. He had a serious situation with Staph Bacteria.  Now I want to caution you that neither claims nor suggestions are being made here.  I believe that our Veterinarians should always be consulted in every situation. They are licensed practitioners and are qualified to give you good council.  This farmer had some incredible results with Oxy Blast and asked me to visit them.  I am not going to share all of it with you, since I did not ask permission  from the farmer.  Let me tell you though, that I was offered cake and coffee JJ and we visited for a few hours.  Farmers do not spend time with you if they are not happy with the results.
Chicken Farm ~
A chicken farmer called me the other day. He wanted to know what else he could do with Oxy Blast. He claims to see a great benefit in health of his flock.
I could go on and on, however, we want to give you more than just the vast amount of testimonies we get.
Let me say this: if it’s not working for you; if our product does not show you result in 6 months; you will be able to take advantage of our guarantee.  Ask your local Dealer to show you our guarantee.
~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~
We have customers that resist our Dealers when they introduce them to Oxy Blast for several reasons:
  • Price – cheaper is not better if it does not give you the same benefits, (because they have not had a chance to see the benefits yet)
  • Perception – perception that water is not something that can benefit their organization or that they just do not need the added expense because of low milk prices or low market prices.
  • Misinformation – getting information from someone that doesn’t really know the product and what it can do or just because they do not understand the vast benefits of our product.
I believe that we have to get a potential customer communicating with us on the same level.  This level is accomplished by trust and that trust is created because we are genuinely concerned about our product and how it affects them and their operation.  We also know what we are talking about or have immediate access to someone with the knowledge & expertise that is needed.  I also believe that if honesty, integrity and respect are used in all communication with our customers (this goes both ways; from us to the customer and from the customer to us), we can have an open, trusting dialogue.  I
If they only knew what we knew about the things our product is accomplishing out there, they wouldn’t think  of us as “just another salesperson” trying to sell them product, take their money and run.  Everyone will benefit: them, us and all the people that are involved in bringing this product to market.  How do we get that across?  We need to educate people and make them aware of something that they don’t know.
Oxy Blast is an incredibly good product when used properly and when we know what we are trying to fix. It takes patience and perseverance, in addition to the honesty & integrity I mentioned earlier.  We have to show them that we care about them and their operation.
Please look for the earlier article “Our Belief”, further down in this News section, to understand and appreciate our mission and corporate philosophy.
I want to thank all of the people behind the scenes that help us bring this product to our customers.  I want to thank our Dealers that bring the customers to Oxy Blast and its benefits.  And I also want to thank our customers for believing in us and our product and for having the patience and confidence to wait to see the results.
I also would like to say that I hope that you all have a great harvest this summer and don’t forget to enjoy life.  Every day is a bonus as my wife’s grandfather loved to say.
Best Regards,   Zak
I attended the Hog and Poultry Days with our great local Dealer Tristarag. While there i did a lecture on water and its importance. After the lecture we had a great deal of interest in our product, and what it could do on specific farms. Farmscape radio asked me if I would do a interview. To hear the interview, click on the speaker icon below
On-farm Tests
“The pork industry is blessed with a number of innovators. I recall surveys from decades ago that compared the speed of adoption of new technology by the various commodity sectors, and pork producers were always very near the top of the chart. Perhaps it is the rapidity of turnover in the barn that lends itself to seeing a difference in management quickly. Maybe the intensive agricultural systems attract a certain type of person with a curious mind? Whatever the reason, it is without a doubt that all pig farms participate to a greater or lesser extent in experimenting to improve productivity, reduce costs, or make management easier. Sometimes the results of such experimentation are as expected – For example the pigs on the higher energy, more expensive diet grew more quickly. Often however the results, the time and effort and money required to innovate and experiment results in more questions than answers and does not lead to an innovation being adopted on the farm as part of a new long-term management strategy. This paper will help to explain why results are not always what we expect and how to improve your odds of success in future on-farm trials. Why you should do an on-farm trial Many new technologies come with all the work completed including the change we can expect, the confidence in the statistical approach used to analyze the test, plus the economic benefit of implementation under a standard set of economic assumptions. So why would you want to take on organizing an on-farm test yourself? There are several reasons to test something on the farm. Typically the top reasons given by innovative producers are:
1) “The proof is in the pudding” or “My situation is different and I don’t believe just because it works elsewhere it will work on my farm”.
2) “The idea is mine and I don’t know of anyone else that has tried it so I need to find out for myself.”
3) “I read/heard about this idea from another country and think it might work here.”
Why on-farm tests often fail.
“The reasons are many but break down into five main categories (First noted by Deen 2009):
1) The trial design would not provide the answer you seek.
2) Consideration of prior knowledge of the item to be tested and the pig barn we are testing in.
3) Danger of believing your test analysis when actually it is worthless.
4) “A micrometer question is often measured with a ‘yard-stick’ …
5) Data collection or the ‘people factor’…
How to Avoid Common Pitfalls when setting up your on-farm trial
1)Do the math first …
2) Calculate the likely financial benefit of a successful trial …
3) Get the people involved …
4) Use a checklist like the one attached to plan your successful trial implementation.
Free Radicals
The following is from various studies & research, ENJOY.
What are free radicals and what is all the hoopla about? why are they so important? A Free Radical is a atom or molecule that has an unpaired electron. These are caused by any metabolic function that requires oxygen to create energy in the body. These free radicals when they run around in the life’s body, they actually steal electrons to repair themselves from surrounding atoms and they create this chain reaction of small atomic explosions, stealing these electrons to repair themselves and this creates a cellular damage, cellular stress and ultimately DNA damage. A negatively charged oxygen singlet can donate that specific electron that atoms are missing. In other words it can stop that chain reaction of cellular destruction by providing a negatively charged oxygen singlet, to counteract a positively charged oxygen singlet. So in essence you are able to eliminate free radicals and create bio available oxygen in the bloodstream. Actually research has shown that the damage to a body is not caused by free radicals but rather the access of free radicals. Aside from toxins, pollution and poor diets the accumulation of free radicals can actually be caused by doing great things like exercise. Free radicals are caused by a metabolic function that uses Oxygen to create energy. So by doing exercise you actually increase the amount of free radical activity. This all seems to go back to balance and being able to maintain that balance. Balance and normalization of this situation is possible. Our bodies have a built in anti free radical system in a form of blood plasma. Oxygen helps eliminate toxins while hydrogen supports our immune system and helps build our cells and systems. Nutrients need to go in and toxins need to be flushed out. The result will be more energy, a stronger immune system and a healthier body. Allot of people feel they need to look at their water once they see that a problem exists. However they forget that preventative measures make more sense and can be more beneficial. The benefits of clean ~ clear ~ nutritional water are so important especially today. Ailments from bad water can cause future problems rather than immediate in some cases. We actually found a location that had Giardia once and the customer was fine, they actually got immune to it. The body got accustomed to it, if you think of our senses we get used to smell, noise, taste, and other things on a consistent basis. Does this mean that we are not being effected? Food for thought. Thanks for reading.
Someone told me that they have noticed this page, and how much they liked reading it. It woke me up and I thank them for that. I want to compress the information so that you come back and read this every so often. Today I want to quote our Water Physiologist Gordy Jordahl some. Gordy writes in his article about Immune Support.
“What role does quality drinking water, air and balanced mineral intake play in immune support? As far as research goes, immune support is one of the last frontiers in animal health.
Consider that the body is made up of trillions of cells. The cells are made up of atoms and atoms are made up of electrical impulses spinning around each other in groups called protons, neutrons and electrons. The speed at which they spin around each other establishes an electrical frequency.
The cells and all the body fluids surrounding the cells carry these frequencies creating a perfect magnetic force of energy in and between the cells called polarity required to retain metabolism.
When foreign invaders enter the body such as bacteria, viruses or toxins they have different electrical frequencies than healthy cells. The different frequencies allow the immune system to identify the invaders.
Unfortunately, due to environmental stresses like poor water and air quality, the mineral balance disrupts the frequency of ht cell interfering with cellular communication.
Cells regulate temperature and metabolism. These rely on mineral absorption to retain polarization. The cells communicate their need for excretion of waste and toxins, damage repair, and need for specialized defence protect against outside invaders that come from drinking water, air and feeds.
The immune system is a miracle of creation. Quality nutrition through water, air and minerals is required for a healthy immune system.”  ~ Gordy Jordahl.
Antibiotics are becoming a bigger and bigger issue. Oxy Blast builds the immune system and gives you a better immunity. As a result many farms are cutting back on there Antibiotic usage. Please read the following article that CBS did on Antibiotics.
Also there is another link that has info on Antibiotics it is below. http://www.keepantibioticsworking.com/new/news.cfm?refID=107148
(CBS) “It’s scary, I mean, you just can’t describe it really,” said Bill Reeves.
Two years ago, 46-year-old Bill Reeves, who worked at a poultry processing plant in Batesville, Arkansas, developed a lump under his right eye.
“It went from about the size of a mosquito bite to about the size of a grapefruit,” he said.
CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric reports doctors tried several drugs that usually work on this potentially deadly infection: methicillin resistant staph or MRSA – before one saved his life.
“You go from a just regular day to knowing you may die in a couple of hours,” Reeves said.
He wasn’t the only worker from this farming community to get sick. Joyce Long worked at the hatchery, handling eggs and chicks. She got MRSA at least a dozen times, and had to try several drugs as well.
“It was real painful. Shots don’t help, because it’s so infected, it don’t help much,” she said.
Within weeks, 37 people at the hatchery got sick. They’ve filed personal injury claims against the company, Pilgrims Pride, which has no comment.
This is not an isolated incident and chickens aren’t the only concern. A University of Iowa study last year, found a new strain of MRSA — in nearly three-quarters of hogs (70 percent), and nearly two-thirds of the workers (64 percent) — on several farms in Iowa and Western Illinois. All of them use antibiotics, routinely. On antibiotic-free farms no MRSA was found.
Health officials are concerned if workers who handle animals are getting sick – what about the rest of us? Drug resistant infections have sky-rocketed over the past two decades, killing an estimated 70,000 Americans last year alone. It’s an emerging health crisis that scientists say is caused not only by the overuse of antibiotics in humans, but in livestock as well. Antibiotics fed to healthy animals to promote growth and prevent disease.
“My fear is that one of these days we are going to have an organism that’s resistant to everything that we know, and we’ll be left powerless,” said Thomas Cummins, Batesville’s chief medical officer.
“There are a lot of concerns about antibiotics being added to animal feeds that may be contributing to MRSA as well as other antibiotic resistance,” Cummins said. “Certainly the more bacteria are exposed to antibiotics in any shape or form, the more tendency there is for resistance.”
There are different types of drug-resistant bacteria. Some, like e coli and salmonella, can be passed on to people by consuming undercooked meat and poultry. Now, scientists are worried that Americans may be acquiring drug-resistant MRSA – not from eating, but from handling tainted meat from animals that were given antibiotics.
Evidence of MRSA has been found in the nation’s meat supply. But it’s unclear how widespread it may be, because only a small fraction is tested for MRSA.
Shelley Hearne has studied the health effects of factory farming for 25 years.
“How does this go from the farm to the meat counter, to having an adverse effect on humans,” Couric asked.
“If the bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics, it can actually spread in many ways,” Hearne said. “It could be in the food supply, but it also can be in waters that runoff in a farm. It could be in the air. It can happen very quickly in many different ways. It’s why it’s a practice that has to stop on the farms.”
That practice occurs inside factory farms, where antibiotics help animals absorb and process food so they grow bigger, faster – a selling point pushed by the pharmaceutical industry. Because animals are packed into confinement pens, antibiotics are also used to keep disease from spreading like wildfire.
Liz Wagstrom is a veterinarian with the National Pork Board.
“Some people say giving animals antibiotics to prevent illness or promote growth is like putting antibiotics in a child’s cereal,” Couric said. “You know, save them so they’ll work when they are needed.”
“I’d say we do strategically place them,” Wagstrom replied. “It’s not an all day, every pig gets antibiotics every day of his life.”
“So you don’t think they’re being overused by farmers anywhere in this country,” Couric asked.
Wagstrom replied, “the vast majority of producers use them appropriately.”
But drug distributers and dozens of farm workers in four farm belt states -Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma – told us antibiotic use to promote growth is widespread on factory farms.
Former hog worker, Kim Howland took CBS News inside a factory farm in Oklahoma where she worked two years ago.
“They administer drugs, you know, constantly, constantly, constantly,” Howland said. “That’s their fix for everything.
She said drugs like Tylan, Keflex, and Baytril, the same classes used to treat everything from skin to respiratory infections in humans – were given regularly to pigs that were not sick. Her husband contracted MRSA and almost died.
“My conclusion was that I had carried it home,” she said.
Dave Kronlage of Dyersville, Iowa says he uses antibiotics to accelerate growth and fend off disease. But, he says, he does so responsibly.
“You never worry about giving them antibiotics and having them develop bacterial disease that may be some sort of superbug for these animals,” Couric asked.
“No. No,” Kronlage replied.
“How do you prevent that from happening,” Couric asked.
“We don’t always use the same antibiotics for one thing,” Kronlage replied.
Antibiotics, he says, keep the cost of meat at the supermarket lower – and his profits higher.
“Why do you think antibiotics are so necessary for your bottom line,” Couric asked.
“Well, because the bottom line is how healthy you keep those pigs,” Kronlage said. “The healthier those pigs are — the bottom line looks better.”
But the bottom line on antibiotic use in factory farming is this: no one is really monitoring it.
Joshua Sharfstein, is the deputy director of the FDA.
“We want to put in place measures to reduce inappropriate use and we want to see that those are working – in order to do that we have to have a good surveillance system,” Sharfstein said. “There’s no question that needs to be improved.”
“I loved hog farming. And I miss it. I wish I could go back,” Kim Howland said. “But until the walls come down and the roofs come off, there’s no chance.”
When Livestock or humans drink Oxy Blast proprietary hydrogen peroxide formula, it is absorbed into the bloodstream through the mouth specifically through the tongue and under the tongue. Where are humans told to put their nitroglycerin tablets for fast action when they have chest pains due to angina? Under the tongue! The blood oxygen level of the animals will then go up. (this is real evident in white hogs when you see their color turn a bright pink after drinking Oxy Blast)
Once Oxy Blast is in the blood, it encounters two enzymes: catalase and cytochrome-C. Catalase drives the normal reaction to completion immediately. That part of the Oxy Blast that binds with cytochrome-C, however, is not allowed to become water and singlet oxygen for a period of forty minutes. After forty minutes of being bound to cytochrome-C this enzyme begins to act like catalase and breaks down the Oxy Blast to water and singlet oxygen. By this time, the Oxy Blast /cytochrome-C complex has been spread throughout the body. In this way the benefits of Oxy Blast are made available to all cells. Remember just cleaning your water is not enough to create this reaction. You need CLEAN YET NUTRITIONAL WATER TO ACCOMPLISH complete benefits. Oxy Blast does not only clean water it also is the most nutritional product out there.
“I just wanted to tell you about an incredible story! We have a customer in Appleton,MN that had some water issues ,so I went down to her home to see what we were dealing with. When I got there she told me the whole story of how sick she has been for the past few years and could not figure out what was wrong until they tested there water. The had iron bacteria, sulfur, tannins, and 98.5 PPM of arsenic. WOW! She had a competitors reverse osmosis system that was showing 30 ppm of arsenic in the membrane.
To make a long story short, I was set to fix her water once and for all, and told her the products & equipment we use will take care of it. I put in an OXY BLAST system, a single ceramic tank to catch all of the oxide crud, then the water went through their Kinetico softener and then through a charcoal filter to polish the water. It finally went trough a K-5 drinking station (R.O.) with a additional arsenic filter. just got the results back from the lab, I took a sample from kitchen tap after all the equipment and also took sample from r.o. faucet, Now there is virtually NO arsenic in her water at all. She is so happy with us – it is awesome! She is talking to all of her neighbors as we speak to get me in their homes to fix their water issues also!!
I just thought that you should know this testimonial. We have been selling and using your product and people are loving it! NO MORE CLORINAOERS!!! Just OXY-BLAST!!! Anyway, thanks for everything.
Give me a shout anytime!
Thanks. Todd! “
An Interview with a Dairy Nutritionist
By Dale Janssen
I recently met to discuss a four thousand cow dairy with two brother owners, who I met at the World Dairy Expo a few weeks ago, and a dairy nutritionist who works with them. The dairy has several water challenges, including high iron, high TDS and very hard water. The nutritionist liked the idea of using Oxy Blast because we know it would change the form of iron from ferrous to ferric, which is a safe form of iron. He said major problems can result from excess iron in the ferrous form where it is readily absorbed into the body. He told me that this iron can be toxic and it is very important to get it out of the water once it is in the ferric form. He also told me that our Oxy Blast system was cheap compared to the other things they have to buy every day. When it will only cost in Canada $0.10-$0.12 per cow per day (depending on the PPM implemented and water quality), and it is going to do all those things to the water, it is very economical.
He pointed out to me that water is always overlooked, and was pleased that we paid attention to all the parameters of a water test. He also was impressed that Randy was willing to test his Oxy Blast at Iowa State University and thus “put his money where he mouth was.” He also was impressed that Essential Water Solutions, Inc. had all the consultants they do, who are available to answer questions for the prospects and customers. I told him this is all we do and we try to give the best service we can. He looked at me and said, “that is still very important.”
As he left he thanked me for my time and felt that the dairy would start using Oxy Blast really soon, not just because of what it will do for their water, but because of the support staff we have to back it up.
All I can say in closing is that all of us who sell Oxy Blast are blessed to have all these resources to draw from. Thanks, Randy.
Open All for Ponds, Dugouts
Septi Sol (now OpenAll ) for Manure Pits and Lagoons
Recently, I was asked by a distributor if I knew of a way to treat a pond or dugout (that is being used for animal drinking water) for the presence of algae and bacteria. I told him I knew of the perfect product for him to use. It is called Open All and I introduced him to a product called Septi-Sol at the same time.
Open All is a blend of trace minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and a product called deuterium sulfate. When added to water, Open All will get rid of the algae and anaerobic bacteria in the pond water or dugouts because deuterium has the ability to split the hydrogen from the oxygen in a water molecule to oxygenate the water.
Creating extra oxygen is also important for manure pits and lagoons. The extra oxygen, trace minerals, amino acids and the enzymes help feed the aerobic bacteria to break down the solids and dramatically reduce the odor in pits and lagoons.
Dave Kennedy (my former boss who helped get the peroxide and Oxy Blast business started) and I started selling Septi Sol in 1997 for treating manure pits and lagoons. The product was tested in a lab at Iowa State University and revealed that dissolved oxygen levels could be increased four to six fold! With more oxygen available for natural biological activity, odors are quickly reduced or eliminated; ammonia and other gases are reduced, and manure is degraded biologically to reduce the solids in the pit or lagoon.
Septi-Sol also has the ability to convert the manure into a valuable nutrient for the soil. The nitrogen present in the manure will be turned into single cell proteins, enzymes, natural antibiotics, free amino acids and polypeptides that become a natural organic nitrogen fertilizer in a micro solid form. This end product serves as an excellent soil conditioner adding natural benefits like improved soil texture, depth of water percolation and better water retention.
Residential Testimonial
“In June of this year, we installed an Oxy Blast system in my home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I was going to start selling Oxy Blast with my dad and needed to be able to tell others what it has done for my home. The first thing we noticed was the brown scum that came out. We could not believe this is what we had been drinking for several years. The toilets cleaned up. No longer does my wife have to clean the bowls. We also turned off our water softener. Our water is that good! No longer do our two boys have to bathe or shower in chlorinated water and we don’t have to drink it. I believe the Oxy Blast in our drinking water is making us feel better. And this was municipal water here in Cedar Falls that was supposed to be good. Well, now it is. I now can tell my customers what Oxy Blast has done for my home and family.”  -Tim Janssen
Poultry Testimonial
“I am happy with the results we have. The chickens started getting sick a few weeks ago and I thought the Oxy Blast had finally stopped working. Then I checked the injector pump and found it was not working. I replaced the pump and in a few days the hens were doing better again. Thank you.”   -Farm Fresh EggsOxy Blast|Hydrogen Peroxide based water treatment for agriculture|crops|well water|dugouts| and manure pits
